Do you really want to be elected CEO?
I have been asked this question over the last 20 years hundreds of times in different variations. This question was asked by managers who failed to advance within the organization or failed to be elected to the position they wanted in other organizations.
How can I not see how well I fit? Why did not they offer me? How did they choose one that was less suited and experienced than me? What do you expect him to be incapable of? How do they not see what I’m worth? Look at the results I brought. What is missing from me? Why did not I manage to position myself as a natural candidate? Why do not I appreciate my achievements?
Then came the stage of excuses, I do not understand enough in organizational politics. They did not give me enough authority, I did not receive a real opportunity, I did not have enough backup, the situation did not suit the organization. I do not have strong enough support from the board of directors / chairman / owners / workers committee.
Choosing the CEO is indeed preventing various interests from the organization, the initial decision whether to choose an CEO from the inside or bring someone outside the organization. The other decision is what are you looking for? Preservation of the existing situation or approach and an innovative spirit. Another decision whether the main task is streamlining or alternatively growth. The CEO’s Profile.
But choosing a CEO is divided into two situations.
One situation is that there is a natural candidate that suits the situation and the organization and has created a strong enough coalition. In many cases, this will be a CEO who can succeed only in the specific organization or in a specific area, and the situation will not necessarily be repeated in the course of his / her career, but we have little or no influence on him in most cases, L retires abruptly and must fill the position.
A second situation is that the organization has challenges and is looking for a candidate who will succeed in meeting them. Candidates are judged by past results, the abilities they bring, the personality they radiate, their way of thinking, their behavior, and the leadership they impart. The selection process is orderly and the test is the success test expected of the CEO.
In both cases, if you have the profile of the CEO and the organization has not chosen you, there are other organizations that will be blessed with you, and you will have all the skills, abilities, skills and conduct you have done.
What are the expectations of you as CEO in any situation:
Which will provide a value to the shareholders (capital market or public / government body)
That you have strategic thinking – what is the competitive advantage of the organization in the current and future competition with which it is dealing and how and when it can be maximized.
That you have proven leadership – the ability to harness your organization to realize the strategy you will build. To motivate the organization to the vision that you intend to assimilate. All this with human relationships that make people follow you.
Have a business / organizational understanding – Know how to operate the organization with its core competencies, preserve human capital and organizational knowledge and, if necessary, develop growth engines.
That you have a decision-making methodology that is clear and understandable to everyone inside and outside the organization. That will prove your decision-making process and not be perceived as having no decision-making ability or that your decision-making process is not orderly and understandable.
That you have proven ability to choose talented management – throughout the career you have chosen people with proven abilities who have managed to lead the tasks, move the organization forward and not be afraid if they are talented or with the potential to replace it. Have you built a cadre of managers who can replace you.
That you will be able to distinguish between the main and the minor – what are the topics and areas in which it is important to invest and in what order of priorities.
Have the successes that you have accumulated in the past or the areas in which you focused have created a fundamental change or have had a significant impact on your organization or have you just created a cosmetic change?
The test for success in becoming CEO or as a natural candidate for CEO is the test of conduct, and not just the potential test.
